Scholarship Description

Ban Ki-moon Global Citizen Scholarship Program For Young Africans is open. To empower young exceptional candidates by facilitating their participation in international conferences. As well as tailor-made, short-term academic training and supporting and mentoring them during the development of their own SDG Micro-Project.

The scholarship comes with the opportunity to interact and work with high-level decision-makers. You will also have the opportunity to attend international fora. The applicants will have the opportunity to attend different educational seminars, and training at the same time gain insight from experts and mentors.

The Ban Ki-moon Center for Global Citizens grants six full scholarships to young African graduate and Ph.D. students.

About Ban Ki-moon Center for Global citizen

Ban Ki-moon Center for Global citizen, is an international organization that is based in Vienna, Austria. It was established in January 2018.

The chairperson was Ban Ki-moon, 8th secretary General of the UN (2007-2016), and also by Heinz Fischer, 11th President of the Republic of Austria (2004 – 2016).

The organization is an independent non-profit organization that is under Austrian law.

The mission of Ban Ki-moon Center for Global Citizens is to empower women and youths to make the best out of the present world.

One of it major aim is to build a better tomorrow for the young and upcoming ones. The basis for service of the organization is without discrimination and also strives for a world base on universal respect for human rights. The is no element of discrimination of identity, age, gender, religion, nationality, etc.

The center uses the knowledge which they have gathered to work for peace, and poverty eradication.

The center carries out its function by Empowering the youth, women, and maintaining Justice and human right worldwide.

The organization has the ability to provide job opportunities and internship opportunities.

The organization believes leadership and mediation are essential to peace and security.

Advocacy is the key to empowerment, and education is fundamental to fostering global citizenship.

Through public and informal diplomacy, the Centre engages with leaders, youth, academia, international organizations, and civil society at all levels on global citizenship.

Leadership

The center shows enormous appreciation to the Co-chair’s efforts in multilateralism, advancing international cooperation and leadership capacity, in building for the youth and women in the global citizen mindset.

Some Fellowships, like Global Citizen Fellowship, are long-term leadership development opportunities awarded to exceptional young aspiring leaders, who have a strong zeal to become change-makers for sustainable development.

One can take part in this opportunity, the selected fellows take part in a two-week in-person training in Vienna, Austria, which is executed in cooperation with the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, an institution of excellence for the study of international affairs.

The unique training includes workshops on the SDGs, SDG leadership skills and SDG project management training, participation in high-level events and conferences, many networking opportunities, team-building activities, and an exciting cultural program.

The fellows take part in a six-month remote fellowship phase during which they receive guidance to implement an SDG Micro-Project in their home communities.

Mediation

This center takes part in international initiatives that bring the youth in contact with young experts and practitioners in order to develop a vision to manage current and future security challenges and peace efforts.

Advocacy

This center leads and promotes multi-stakeholder efforts in addressing several global issues such as climate change, global peace, gender equality, sustainable cities, and global citizen action, particularly through education.

One of the main is to empower activists, academia, policymakers, and civil society in using climate advocacy and implementation strategies in the framework of the SDGs through an intersectional feminist lens.

Education

The Co-Chairs and the Ban Ki-moon Centre regularly lecture at universities, contribute to online classes, engage with numerous schools and other pedagogical institutions to raise awareness about the importance of the SDGs, the Paris Climate Agreement, human rights, justice, and peace.

Scholarship requirements

Requirements for the scholarship are the following:

  • Must have an African origin, regardless of race, ethnicity and gender.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 1 year of a master’s program, be working towards a PhD, or be within 2 years of graduation from a master’s program or higher.
  • Must be between the age range of 20-35.
  • Applicants must provide evidence that they may otherwise not have access to such an opportunity.
  • Applicants must provide proof of a minimum English level B2 (European Standards)
  • Further showcasing of scholars and selected projects

Application Component :

  • Online summer school with the University of Bordeaux on “African Cities in 2030”  (May 31 – June 4, 2021).
  • Virtual expert workshops on the SDGs, project management, fundraising, and more.
  • Participation at the virtual RELX Inspiration Day June 2021.
  • One-on-one mentoring by professors at the University of Bordeaux and high-level partners of the Ban Ki-moon Centre during the implementation of an individual SDG Micro-Project.
  • Possible virtual or in-person participation at the “Africa-France Summit on Sustainable Cities and Regions” in Montpellier, France (July 8 – 11, 2021).
  • Certificate of Achievement after the successful completion of the SDG Micro-Project, signed by Ban Ki-Moon and Heinz Fischer.
  • Alumni Network membership for scholars who successfully complete the program.
