The Nurse Corps Scholarship Program is a competitive program run by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) at HHS’ Bureau of Health Workforce (BHW). By improving the health workforce and linking competent professionals to communities in need, HRSA improves the health of underserved and vulnerable populations.

Nursing students that meet the requirements can apply for the Nurse Corps Scholarship Program.

We will cover your tuition, fees, and other educational expenses if you are accepted. In exchange, you will work in a Critical Shortage Facility after graduation.

Purpose of the scholarship

Provides competitive scholarships to nursing students enrolled in one of the following authorized nursing degree programs:

  • A nursing school with an associate’s degree
  • A nursing school that is part of a university
  • A nursing diploma program
  • RN-to-Baccalaureate Transition (Bridge Program) Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with an entry-level master’s degree

Scholarships are given to students in exchange for a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years of full-time service in critical shortage facilities (CSFs) located in, classified as, or serving primary care or mental health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).

By increasing the number of healthcare professionals serving neglected and vulnerable populations, the goal is to make primary care and mental health services more accessible.

Amount of Funding

In exchange for a minimum of two years and up to a maximum of four years of full-time service at a critical shortage facility (CSF) residing in, designated as, or serving primary care or mental health HPSAs, the program provides a monthly stipend and scholarship support for tuition, eligible fees, and other reasonable costs.

Full-time students receive a stipend of $1,434 a month.
252 new and continuation awards are expected to be given out.

Women’s health nurses, certified nurse midwives, and advanced practice nurses specializing in women’s health or obstetrics/gynecology have been allocated up to $5 million of the overall program funds.

Furthermore, up to $2 million of the total program money has been set aside for entry-level health workers interested in pursuing a career as a registered nurse.

Who Can Apply?

If you meet the following criteria, you are eligible:

  • Are you a born or naturalized citizen of the United States, a national, or a lawful permanent resident?
  • Are you accepted or enrolled in a nursing degree program at a school of nursing in the United States?
  • Classes must begin no later than September 30.
  • There are no federal judgment liens on your property.
  • If you don’t already have a service contract, you’ll need to create one.
  • Are you behind on your federal debt?

Why should I submit an application?

If you win an award, you’ll get a monthly stipend, plus we’ll cover your expenses.

  • Costs are modest (books, clinical supplies/instruments, and uniforms are included).

Is the stipend taxable?

Yes. The full amount of your scholarship is taxable.

All funds awarded are reported to the IRS. State and municipal taxes are not deducted from any of the scholarship payments.

What is the significance of the Nurse Corps Scholarship Program?

Many people in the United States do not have access to basic health care. Checkups, preventive screenings, and immunizations are all part of this. This occurs when a community’s healthcare workforce is insufficient.
