Scholarship description

The scholarship is for students all around the world who are qualified and willing to accept the offer.

The Victoria University of Willington is making available the Tongarewa scholarship to celebrate the university’s commitment to the international student community.

Students who are entering their first year of an undergraduate degree and those who are entering their postgraduate degree programme are the illegible candidates.

The recipients are to act as ambassadors for Victoria university of wellington. At the same time take part in all the necessary events that are involved.

 About the university of wellington

Founded in the year 1897.

Teaching began in April  1899 with 115 students enrolled in the first year.

The Victoria university Wellington is one of the ranked universities in New Zealand, it is a research university.

The university is located in the capital city of New Zealand.

Thereby the university has a strong link with the government departments and agencies.

And international agencies, industries, regional and local government, iwi and environmental organizations, as well as some of New Zealand’s major research institutes.

Later the College Council decided to build on ‘six vertical acres’ in Kelburn, the site of the Kelburn campus today.

Research at the University began in 1899 following the arrival of the University’s four pioneering Professors Thomas Easterfield, Hugh Mackenzie, Richard Maclaurin and John Rankine Brown.

The Growth of the University

Hunter Building begun In 1904,

building, opened in 1906 by the Governor of New Zealand, Lord Plunket.

Student numbers rose from 254 in 1905 to over 700 in 1923.  

A reputation for fine teaching and research also grew.

1961, the University of New Zealand system dissolved. On 1 January 1962, Victoria College became Victoria University of Wellington.

The University incorporated the Wellington College of Education as the Faculty of Education on 1 January 2005.

Established by Victoria University of Wellington and Massey University, a center of musical excellence that combined the institutions’ music programs.

But as of today The single campus in Kelburn with fewer than 260 students, Victoria University of Wellington has grown into a network of campuses, research centres, institutes, and partnerships worldwide.

The scholarships range from NZ$5,000 to NZ$10,000.  Partial fee-based scholarship Tuition fees is for 1 year of study.\

Scholarship Requirements

Applicants must be:

  • international students who are paying full international fees
  • entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree.
  • completed your secondary education at a New Zealand school
  • completed the English Proficiency Programme or Foundation Studies Programme
  • are a Study Abroad or Twinning student from one of our overseas partner universities
  • are in your second year of study in the same degree program at Victoria University of Wellington

 Documents/requirements

  • A personal statement of up to 500 words outlining why you wish to study at Victoria University of Wellington, your academic goals, and why you merit the Scholarship.
  • Full transcripts and other documentation relevant to the qualification type.
  • An offer of place from Victoria University of Wellington (conditional or unconditional).
  • the completed online application must be submitted by 4:30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  • The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  • The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  • Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.

To apply, you must submit a completed online application before the deadline.  The scholarship application deadlines are 1 June 2021 for (Trimester 2, 2021), 1 September 2021 (Trimester 3, 2021), and 30 November 2021 for (Trimester 1, 2022). Applications will normally open 1 month prior to the closing date.
